Camps - Summer

Brainy Camps Association of Children's National Medical Center
For information and to register: www.brainycamps.com

The Brainy Camps Association is a consortium of residential summer camps and services for children with chronic health conditions.

Located at an ACA approved facility in High View, West Virginia, each camp offers children and teens with specific conditions a real summer camp experience that provides opportunities for them to gain confidence and build self-esteem. The campers learn about their condition and become effective partners in managing their own care.

At each camp, children and teens – and older teens transitioning to adult care – become part of a team, while learning and having fun in a safe and supportive environment. Campers choose from activities including team sports, hiking, arts and crafts, yoga, pottery, ropes and challenge courses, canoeing, gardening, camp Olympics, swimming, archery, and sleeping under the stars in tents.

Support groups and educational programs promote knowledge, skill development, and lasting friendships.  Through leadership training, many campers gain the skills to become counselors and self advocates, serving as role models in our camps and in their communities.

Our Staff
To ensure our campers’ health and safety, the camp is staffed 24 hours a day by medical professionals including physicians, nurses, social workers, physical therapists, and psychologists from Children’s National, as well as trained counselors carefully selected for their genuine interest in children and teens.

Brainy Camps Association of Children's National Medical Center
Motto: You have to have brains to live well with a chronic health condition

We are often asked where the name "Brainy Camps" originated? As everyone who lives with a chronic health disorder knows, you have to be smart to live well with something that is going to impact your life on a daily basis. That's what Brainy Camps is all about, teaching kids to live wisely with their conditions without allowing their disorder to define who they are.

Volunteer opportunities are available for those who want to make a difference in the lives of children with chronic health conditions.  If you are interested in becoming involved and to register as a volunteer or camper, please go to our website for more information at www.brainycamps.com or check out our 2013 brochure.
