Pediatric Advanced Needs Assessment and Care Team (PANDA)

The Pediatric Advanced Needs Assessment (PANDA) and Care Team attends to children, adolescents, and young adults under the care of any inpatient service at Children’s National Medical Center. The team’s goal is simple: to prevent, reduce, and soothe symptoms for patients in the advanced stages of illness.

Be assured that when your child is a patient at Children’s National, you and your child have the support of a compassionate staff that sees to your every need.

The PANDA Team
Our palliative care specialists assist families and patients with advanced illnesses. Each member of the PANDA Care team is an integral part of the consultation process and involved in the development of individualized care plans.

The PANDA Care Team seeks to support the treatment of underlying illnesses while enhancing the quality of life for patients. Your child’s care team includes:
• Advanced practice nurses and registered nurses
• Anesthesia pain service representatives
• Augmentative communications specialists
• Child life specialists
• Ethics committee members
• Parent advocates
• Pastoral care representatives
• Physicians
• Psychologists
• Social workers
Services for Patients and Families
Part of our role is to help facilitate communication among the patient, family, and members of the healthcare team. We coordinate with you, your child, and the primary care team to:
• Achieve optimal quality of life for the patient
• Coordinate inpatient, outpatient, or home care
• Investigate complementary and alternative medicine
• Manage pain and discomfort
• Promote healing and comfort
We also provide ongoing education for families and healthcare providers, and promote awareness of concerns commonly faced by patients with advanced illnesses and their families, such as:
• Communication
• Decision making
• Hospice and home care
• Family dynamics
• Pain and symptom management
• Palliative care
• School interventions
• Sibling issues
• Spiritual concerns
PANDA in the Community
The PANDA Care Team is a founding partner of the District of Columbia Pediatric Palliative Care Collaborative (DCPPCC); a group of local institutions committed to developing comprehensive pediatric palliative care services across care settings, from the hospital to the home.

Other partners include Georgetown University, the Health Services for Children (HSC) Pediatric Center and community hospices.
