Five years after her surgery, Maria has made tremendous strides to reduce her weight. She’s lost about 140 pounds and she’s attending college. Maria was the first patient to have weight-loss surgery at Children's National. With its multidisciplinary approach, the team developed a personalized plan for the teenager. “I feel better physically, emotionally, mentally – everything. I feel like a new person and it feels incredible.”

“We were told the majority of conjoined twins don’t survive gestation, and terminating the pregnancy was an option,” Tokoya says. “Raymond and I were devastated. We weren’t experts on conjoined twins, but the babies seemed to have the necessary anatomy to make it through pregnancy, so we chose to keep going.”
