Under the leadership of program director Brett J. Loechelt, MD, a recognized expert in the field of blood and marrow transplantation, the laboratory’s team is committed to providing compassionate quality care and pioneering research to advance treatment therapies and outcomes for patients. 

The laboratory is an accredited facility with the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), and the College of American Pathologists (CAP). To earn these accreditations, the Laboratory meets and exceeds the highest standards for laboratory testing and patient care.

Our laboratory team performs cell processing of bone marrow, peripheral blood, umbilical cord blood, and donor lymphocyte for transplantation autologous (patient) and transplantation allogeneic (donor) blood and marrow transplantation. 

We use state-of-the-art equipment and technology, such as Flow Cytometry Core, CliniMACS® and Isolex® instruments. For patients, this means shorter treatment times. For parents and families, it means knowing that your child is receiving the most advanced care available. 

Research at Children’s National

The laboratory collaborates with the Children’s Research Institute to perform stem cell processing procedures for ongoing clinical trials, which aim to improve the health and quality of life for children with blood and bone marrow disorders.

Christopher Melkonian was six years old when he came down with a low-grade fever and diffuse bone pain. Unsure of what was happening, his parents Darlene and David took him to Children’s National Health System and soon found out that Christopher had acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of blood and bone marrow cancer that affects white blood cells.
