Center for Hospital-Based Specialties

Executive Vice President, Chief Medical Officer for Hospital and Specialty Services: David Wessel, MD

Children’s Center for Hospital-Based Specialties encompasses those disciplines that provide critical and acute care for neonates, infants and children and adolescents who are injured or ill, and diagnostic and therapeutic imaging for these children.

Emergency and trauma services, neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, and transport medicine are at the core of the Center for Hospital-Based Specialties. Children’s Level I pediatric Emergency Medicine and Trauma Center features 29 treatment beds, 18 of which are in private rooms, and is staffed by board certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine physicians and a team of highly skilled professionals specially trained in pediatric emergency care. In addition, there is an 8-bed Evaluation and Treatment Unit for children requiring extended observation and treatment but not hospital admission.

Hospitalists provide 24-hour coverage for inpatients throughout the hospital and work closely with the Emergency Department, and Medical and Surgical Specialists to ensure coordinated care until the child is ready for follow-up by their primary care physician. Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units are available, should complications arise following surgery or therapy as well as acute injury and illness. Both are equipped with state-of-the-art respiratory and cardiovascular monitoring equipment, and are staffed by highly skilled, internationally known pediatric critical care medicine specialists and neonatologists. Children’s Center for Hospital-Based Specialties depends highly on the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Integrating imaging expertise and technical abilities enables our Radiologists to perform many procedures that once required surgery in the radiology suites.
